10 Questions to ask a wedding photographer

before you book

Question one

I have certain ideas, are you able to do them?

WHY ITS GOOD TO KNOW THIS;

This is a great question as you may love the photographer and his/her style but you may have ideas that they may not want or even be able to do.

MY ANSWER;

Although I’m more of a storytelling and documentary style photographer I love new ideas and challenges. It’s the working with the clients to try and create both something unique and that will create ever lasting memories.

Question two

Are you insured?

WHY ITS GOOD TO KNOW THIS;

I hardly ever get asked this question, yet its really important.

If your photographer has any sort of accident at your wedding and it causes a problem to you or one of your guests. Its important to know they are covered. Anything can happen on a wedding day and its good to know everything and everyone is covered.

It also shows that your dealing with a professional. The insurance will not only cover them publicly but covers them and their equipment.

MY ANSWER;

I am insured both publicly and for my own equipment and personal injury.

Question three

What happens if you cant make it on the day?

WHY ITS GOOD TO KNOW THIS;

A really good question to ask your photographer. Its not a great thing to talk about but accidents do happen, people do get sick and unfortunately we lose close friends and love ones. But what if something like this happens to your photographer really close to the wedding day?

MY ANSWER;

I’m a member of a professional photography association that has a lot of members and there are plenty of prestigious photographers there who can always help out. I’m also friends with some great photographers and we’re always there to help each other out in an emergency. Though this has never happened to me or any of my colleges yet.

Question four

How do I get in touch with you?

If you would like to get in touch with me and ask me anymore questions or to see if we are a good fit for each other then drop me and email at weddings@stewalkerphotogrpahy.co.uk or fill in the quick form on my contact page.

Why not take a look through my gallery and see what you think?

question five

What if your camera breaks?

WHY ITS GOOD TO KNOW THIS;

A photographer you’re looking at may take some great photographs and be a great storyteller, but they’re not going to be able to do that if they don’t have any backup equipment and their camera breaks.

MY ANSWER;

I have 2 back up cameras that are pretty much within arms reach during any wedding. I even have back up computers at home and back up hard drives for my back ups!

Question six

What if it rains on my wedding day?

WHY ITS GOOD TO KNOW THIS;

From a photography perspective I don’t really see rain as a problem. If it rains it rains though, do you have a photographer who can work in the rain and get you some challenging unique photographs?

MY ANSWER;

When a wedding client asks me the question “what if it rains?” I simply reassure them that the day is all about them and not the weather. You see if its going to rain on your wedding day then its going to rain. You must embrace it. I often speak with the couple and ask about back up measures such as have cool or stylish umbrellas ready which will create some great memorable images. Think of this, no one will forget a couple dancing in the rain on their wedding day and the images would be fantastic. You could have some rain boots or wellies to wear to create more unique moments and images. The point here is to work with your photographer to ensure all eventualities are covered.

Question seven

Do I get digital copies of my images?

WHY ITS GOOD TO KNOW THIS;

There are many photographers that work in different ways when it comes to providing you with your final product. Some you’ll pay for their time and then you’ll have to buy the images afterwards at a viewing session and other photographers only offer albums and wall products and many offer digital images.

Make sure you know exactly what you’ll have once everything is over and if you’ll have high resolution files and printing rights.

There is no right or wrong way for photographers to structure their services its what works best for them.

MY ANSWER;

I offer full resolution files as standard with options to upgrade to fine art albums and prints.

For me, this gives you more flexibility when it comes to your precious memories.

Question eight

How can I be sure that we will get along on the day?

WHY ITS GOOD TO KNOW THIS;

A very important question to ask. Can you imagine someone at your wedding who wasn’t much of a people person or lacked personality?

Is this important if their images are amazing?

Thats personal preference. I think finding a balance is best. Many couples want someone who just blends into the background and just documents the day so may think that personality is not that important. Though if you want to request things from your photographer or ask questions you’ll want them to do it with a smile.

I have known peoples weddings to be remembered by the “rude photographer” other than the day itself!

MY ANSWER;

The answer to this question though is simply;

Meet with your photographer before you book.

9 times out of 10 I always meet with my potential clients before they book. It really helps with piece of mind and that you know exactly who your going to be sharing one of the most important days of you life with. You’re letting them into your life!

Arrange a meeting with me and I provide coffee and cake if you want!

question nine

How soon after the wedding will I receive my images?

WHY ITS GOOD TO KNOW THIS;

This is a great question to ask because once the wedding is over you’ll be really excited to see the images and you’ll want to see them as soon as possible. So knowing how long it will take for your pictures to be ready will help you deal with the excitement. Some photographers can have them back in a day and some may take months. Its just good to know.

MY ANSWER;

I don’t have specific time on how long it takes because each wedding is different. What I do tell my clients is that they will be ready within 4 weeks of the wedding day. Sometimes I can have them ready in a couple of days sometimes longer. I individually edit all my images and after a full days shooting it can take some time. I want to make sure they're perfect.

Question ten

Who will actually be photographing my wedding?

WHY ITS GOOD TO KNOW THIS;

You’ll find that the majority of wedding photographers or wedding photography companies are ran and shot by one person. In some cases there will be companies who have several photographers and then send one to your wedding. Its rare, however its good to know because if you see images you like with a specific style you’ll want to make sure your getting exactly what you want.

MY ANSWER;

Like most photographers there is only one photographer, that’s me! Though my wife often attends the weddings to help out and assist me when needed.
